Understanding Causes of Gastrointestinal Conditions
Gastrointestinal conditions can arise from a number of factors that are often interconnected. These include functional disorders, mechanical disorders, and inflammatory disorders. Functional disorders, now called Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) are a large group of disorders that stem from a miscommunication of the brain and the gut. A few examples of DGBI conditions are functional dyspepsia, IBS, and nausea and vomiting disorders. Mechanical gastrointestinal conditions have a structural or muscular dysfunction. Examples include hiatal hernias, partial intestinal obstructions, gastroparesis, and pelvic floor dyssynergia. Inflammatory conditions are commonly immune-related and involve Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Oftentimes, there is an overlap in these presentations. Additional factors that play a significant role include stress, diet, previous trauma or surgeries, and hormonal fluctuations. A thorough patient history and foundational care are key and support comprehensive care.
